Bukit Barisan Selatan National
Park is representative of the Bukit
Barisan mountain range consisting of vegetation
types of mangrove forest, beach forest, tropical rain forest and up the mountains in
Sumatra. Bukit Barisan
Selatan National Park is a national park dedicated
to protecting tropical rainforests of Sumatra island.
along with its natural
wealth. UNESCO made
the South Bukit Barisan National
Park as a World Heritage. South Bukit Barisan declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in
1935 and became a National Park
in 1982. At first the size of the park is
an area of 356 800 hectares. But the area
of the park is currently calculated
using GIS for approximately 324,000 hectares.

Park is located in the southwestern region of the tip of Sumatra. Seventy percent
of the park (249 552 hectares) are included in the administrative district of West Lampung and
Tanggamus region, both of which are part
of Lampung Province.
Other parts of
the park covers 74
822 hectares (23% of the overall area of
the park) and were Kaur region of the Bengkulu province. South
Sumatra is also very
important for garden borders overlap with
provincial borders.

Bukit Barisan Selatan National
Park has some lowland forests in
Sumatra, the last
time protected. Very rich in terms of biodiversity and is home to three
species most endangered
large mammals in
the world: Sumatran elephant (less than
2,000 head of which survive today), Sumatran
rhinoceros (entire global population: 300
individuals and drastically
diminishing in number) and the Sumatran tiger
(the entire global population of around 400 people).
Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park is included in the Global 200 Ecoregions,
namely ranking terrestrial habitats, freshwater and sea on earth the most striking
from a biological perspective created by the WWF. The park is highlighted as a priority
area for Sumatran rhino conservation through the Asian Rhino and Elephant Action
Strategy (AREAS) of WWF. In addition, IUCN, WCS and WWF have identified the South
Bukit Barisan National Park as a Tiger Conservation Unit is the most important forest
areas for conservation of tigers in the world. Finally, in 2002, UNESCO has
chosen this area to be nominated as World Heritage Cluster Mountainous Areas together
with Mount Leuser National Park and Kerinci Seblat.

Plant
species in the park
include Pidada (Sonneratia
sp.), Palm (Nypa fruticans),
sea pine (Casuarina
equisetifolia), pandan (Pandanus sp.), Cempaka
(Michelia champaka), meranti (Shorea sp.),
Mersawa (Anisoptera curtisii), ramin (Gonystylus
bancanus), Keruing (Dipterocarpus sp.), damar
(Agathis sp.), rattan
(Calamus sp.), and
raflesia flower (Rafflesia
arnoldi).
Plants that became the hallmark of this national park is a tall corpse flower (Amorphophallus decus-silvae), giant corpse flower (A. titanum) and giant orchid / cane (Grammatophylum speciosum). Tall tall corpse flower can reach more than 2 meters.

Park is the habitat of bears
(Helarctos malayanus malayanus), Sumatran rhinoceros
(Dicerorhinus sumatrensis sumatrensis), Sumatran tiger
(Panthera tigris sumatrae),
Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus),
tapir (Tapirus indicus),
agile gibbon (Hylobates agilis) , gibbon
(H. syndactylus syndactylus),
hoop (Presbytis melalophos
fuscamurina), deer (Tragulus kanchil javanicus),
and hawksbill (Eretmochelys
imbricata).
Menjukut lake in the park directly adjacent to the sea off the Indian Ocean, which resembles a very large swimming pool and is located not far from the shoreline.

How to reach
the Bukit Barisan
Selatan National Park: Telok Betong-Tanjung Karang-Agung City to use cars,
Agung City-Tampang by motor boat about six hours, Agung City-Banjarnegoro-Sukaharja
Atas / Suwoh use
the car for about four hours, and Agung City-Kubu Perahu about seven
hours by car.
